The organization of lighting in the office affects the well-being and performance of employees. If the lighting fixtures are incorrectly selected and positioned, there is a great likelihood of rapid fatigue and a reduction in the quality of work of the staff. Conversely, the right office lighting ensures high productivity and a good mood of workers. Consider what the standards for lighting in the office, and how to correctly select the lighting fixtures for the workplace.

Office Lighting Standards

Office Lighting Standards

Office lighting is regulated by regulations. When choosing light, an important role is played by the light value – illuminance, which is measured in lux (lx).

Standards

The table shows the illumination standards for different types of office space:

Room type Illuminance (lux)
Offices that work with drawings 500
Spacious offices with free planning 400
Offices where people work at computers 300
Meeting Rooms 200
Stairs 100
Archive rooms 75

Light should provide comfortable working conditions for employees.

Calculating Office Lighting

Calculating Office Lighting

Let’s calculate the required illumination of the luminous flux. We use the formula: E = N × S × K, where E – luminous flux, N – rate of illumination, S – area, K – ceiling height factor. Let’s do the calculation for a large office with free planning area of 100 square meters. m, and a ceiling height of 3 m. Correspondingly the ceiling height factor is 1.2. Given the norm of light of 400 lux, substituting the formula for a known figure: E = N × S × K = 400 × 100 × 1.2 = 48 000 Lm. So the required illuminance of luminous flux is 48 000 Lm.

LED lamp with power 25-30 W radiates light intensity 2500 Lm. Let’s calculate the required number of LEDs. Divide the resulting value of 48,000 Lm by the luminous flux of one bulb. In order to fill a 100 square meter office with intensive light and a ceiling height of 3 meters, you need 19-20 LED bulbs of 25-30 W.
